Cable mapping

CABLE MAPPINGWhen locating conductors in earthworks, whether excavating or blasting, it is important to make sure exactly where power lines run underground. Otherwise, major additional costs, major damage to the power grid or, in the worst case, injuries may ensue. At Ostromap we have several years of experience in cable location and can help you find telephone, electricity and fibre cables as well as any heating pipes that are underground. This is done with the help of a cable locator.

Cable or wire location is done by electromagnetic measurement. The principle behind an electromagnetic search is that a transmitter creates a magnetic field around any metallic cable or wire that lies in the ground, and, with a receiver, it is possible to determine its position from ground level. So, request our cable location service and we will mark the terrain so that the earthworks are safe and so that no damage to wiring will occur.

Cable mapping

Mapping with GPS technology is a good solution to the problem of maintaining underground wire and cable documentation. In the survey, we use the Trimble R8 or Trimble R10 receiver. We carry out mappings of telephone, electricity and fibre cables as well as municipal infrastructures such as water and sewerage. The mapping can include existing wiring, but also new cables for different construction stages when they are visible on the ground. The customer can choose the format in which the cable documentation should be provided.

Wooden utility pole inspection

Wooden pole inspections are carried out to ensure optimum safety for both the electricians who work on the utility poles and the public, and we at Ostromap offer this facility. The staff who carry out these inspections have undergone separate specialist training in respect of wooden pole inspection (decay inspection). The main task of pole inspection is to check if any decay has occurred, either on the surface or inside the pole. In the test, a trench at a depth of approximately 40cm is dug around the post. The surface is checked with an awl, and then the pole is tested with a hammer for any inside decay. The circumference of the post is measured to calculate if the post should be replaced. At the client's request, other things can also be checked, such as insulators, transformers, warning signs and guyline protectors. The poles are mapped even if they have not been mapped before. The mapping is done by GPS technology and documented later. The inspection documentation will be done according to the preference of the client and is delivered in the desired format.
